How to Choose the Perfect Bags and Avoid Excess Baggage Fees: Travel Smart

Updated: Apr 22

Greetings, fellow travelers! If you're planning a vacation, one of the most crucial decisions you'll make is selecting the right luggage and gear to accompany you on your journey. As a seasoned traveler who's had my fair share of luggage incidents and issues, let me be your guide in navigating this essential aspect of travel.

I’ve seen about anything you could imagine happening over the past 20+ years of travel.  I’ve had my luggage lost, stolen, and damaged.  I’ve had flights cancelled causing me to spend unexpected nights in connecting cities without my luggage.  I’ve been on flights that were unexpectedly hot or cold.  I’ve had bags break while checking in for my flight….and so on.  My motto now is to be as prepared as possible.  In some ways the preparation helps mitigate my stress levels as things happen (or don’t happen for that matter).  It also helps me manage my budget by not incurring unexpected fees from airlines or expenses associated with buying an additional bag on my journey home.

From navigating bustling airports to exploring remote villages off the beaten path, I've come to appreciate the importance of having the right luggage and gear for every aspect of my journey. Whether it's a durable suitcase for checked baggage, a versatile carry-on bag for in-flight essentials, or a functional day bag for on-the-go adventures, each piece plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. With careful consideration and a bit of planning, you too can embark on your next Spirited Travel Adventure fully equipped and ready for whatever the world has in store.

Travel Bags and Luggage

Selecting the Right Checked Luggage:

When it comes to checked luggage, durability and security are paramount. Look for suitcases constructed from sturdy materials like polycarbonate or ABS plastic, capable of withstanding the rigors of baggage handling. Opt for models with reinforced corners and TSA-approved locks to deter theft and ensure peace of mind while your belongings are in transit. Consider hard-shell luggage for added protection against rough handling and inclement weather, keeping your items safe and secure throughout your journey.  Also, look for bags with 4 spinning wheels, a telescopic handle, and a side-carry handle.

Consider luggage with built-in expansion capabilities for souvenirs or extra belongings acquired during your travels. Don’t forget to add a luggage tag to make sure that your bags aren’t grabbed by someone else by accident.  Typical checked luggage standards when traveling domestically within the United States limits typically adhere to a maximum linear dimension of 62 inches (which includes the sum of length, width, and depth) and a maximum weight that varies by airline and ticket class. Economy class passengers usually have a weight limit of around 50 pounds per bag. However, it’s essential to verify the specific rules of your chosen airline, as policies can differ and change. Internationally, similar standards apply, with most airlines following the same 62-inch linear dimension limit. Weight allowances may vary based on the airline and fare type, so always check in advance to avoid surprises at the airport.

Choosing the Perfect Carry-On Travel Bag:

For your carry-on bag, prioritize convenience and accessibility to essential items you may need during your journey. Look for a versatile backpack or travel tote with multiple compartments to organize your belongings efficiently. Look for features such as padded laptop sleeves, water bottle pockets, and RFID-blocking pockets for added functionality and security. Ensure your carry-on meets airline size restrictions to avoid gate-checking and streamline your travel experience. Pack a change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, and entertainment essentials to keep you comfortable and entertained during your flight or layovers (both planned and unplanned along the way).  Don't forget to include important documents such as your passport, travel itinerary, and emergency contact information in your carry-on bag. It's also a good idea to pack a travel-sized first aid kit and any necessary medications to ensure you're prepared for unexpected emergencies.

Travel Carry On Bag

Day Travel Bags for On-the-Go Adventures:

When exploring your destination, a reliable day bag is indispensable. Choose a lightweight backpack or crossbody bag that strikes the perfect balance between style and functionality. Look for bags with adjustable straps and breathable padding for maximum comfort during long days of sightseeing. Opt for water-resistant materials to protect your belongings from unexpected rain showers or spills while exploring outdoor attractions. Pack essentials such as a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, map or guidebook, and a portable charger to keep you energized and prepared for whatever adventures lie ahead.  Look for day bags with built-in security features such as lockable zippers or hidden pockets to keep your valuables safe while exploring crowded tourist attractions or bustling city streets. Additionally, consider packing a lightweight, packable jacket or scarf for unexpected changes in weather, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Tips to avoid excess baggage fees:

  1. Pack Lightly: The most effective way to avoid excess fees is to pack only what you truly need. Be mindful of the weight and dimensions of your luggage and expect to take some new things home with you.

  2. Know Your Airline’s Policy: Familiarize yourself with your airline’s baggage policy. Each airline has different rules regarding weight limits, dimensions, and fees. Visit their website or contact customer service to get accurate information.

  3. Weigh Your Bags Beforehand: Invest in a portable luggage scale. Weigh your bags at home to ensure they meet the weight requirements. If you’re close to the limit, consider removing non-essential items.

  4. Use Carry-Ons: Whenever possible, opt for carry-on luggage. Most airlines allow one carry-on bag and a personal item (like a purse or laptop bag) free of charge. Make sure your carry-on adheres to size restrictions.

  5. Upgrade Your Ticket: Some ticket classes offer higher baggage allowances. If you’re a frequent traveler or have specific needs, consider upgrading to a class that includes more baggage.

  6. Join Frequent Flyer Programs: Airlines often provide baggage benefits to their loyal customers. Join their frequent flyer programs to enjoy perks like extra baggage allowances or waived fees.

  7. Pack Strategically: Roll your clothes to save space and distribute weight evenly. Use packing cubes or compression bags to organize your belongings efficiently.

  8. Share Luggage: If you’re traveling with someone, share a suitcase. Combine your belongings to avoid paying for an additional bag.

  9. Prepay Baggage Fees Online: Some airlines offer discounted rates if you pay for checked bags online before your flight. Take advantage of these savings.

Selecting the right luggage and gear for international travel requires careful consideration of your specific needs and preferences. From checked luggage to carry-on essentials and day bags for on-the-go adventures, each piece plays a crucial role in ensuring a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. So, pack your bags, fellow wanderers, and set forth on your next adventure with confidence and excitement!
